That’s allegedly what’s going on with Normal People star (and recent Emmy nominee) Paul Mescal and indie singer Phoebe Bridgers, who have been rumored to be seeing one another. The physical evidence is a little sparse, and is based on Bridgers visiting a cafe in Ireland with Mescal and the two doing an Instagram Live session together, but—more promisingly—Bridgers has referred to Mescal as her “internet crush.” (Get in line, buddy.) Is it possible that an online flirtation during lockdown turned into an actual, IRL, post-quarantine courtship?
Let’s not mince words: It’s been a rough summer, in ways small (it’s hot out!) and large (there’s…still a pandemic going on). I, for one, have completely succumbed to what I like to call August Adjacency Syndrome, a condition in which I become limp and useless in and around the month of August. There are only two known cures: 1) the advent of a mid-September breeze, or 2) two of my all-time favorite celebrities dating one another.
I don’t know why the prospect of my favorite singer and the star of one of my favorite TV shows of the year is flooding me with so much dopamine: They are, after all, rich and famous celebrities who definitely do not care about me. Nonetheless, just the idea of Bridgers’s next album centering around songs composed on Mescal’s hotel balcony, featuring wistful lyrics like “You asked me to hold your hand / at the Hulu upfronts,” is bringing me a deep level of joy.
